Human rights activist and former presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Omoyele Sowore has condemned the extrajudicial killings in Nigeria.
Sowore also called for justice for the victims and urged the Nigerian authorities to ensure accountability for all perpetrators, regardless of their affiliations.
Sowore made this known in a statement he shared on his X handle on Sunday.
The #RevelationNow activist, in his statement, gave various instances of mob violence and state-led extrajudicial actions.
He emphasised the importance of ensuring justice in cases like the murder of Deborah Samuel, a student who was lynched by religious extremists in Sokoto on May 12, 2022, and the recent attacks on innocent northerners by vigilantes in Edo State.
Sowore wrote, “Whether you are a Muslim extremist who murdered student Deborah Samuel in Sokoto, or a vigilante who lynched innocent northerners in Utomi, Edo, or @HQNigerianArmy soldiers who extra-judicially murdered Shiite protesters in Abuja, they must face justice for their callous actions without exception."
In May 2022, Deborah Samuel, a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, was brutally murdered by a mob for alleged blasphemy.
First News reported the tragic incident that occurred in Edo State last week, where some vigilante groups killed at least 16 northerners traveling through the state after labeling them as kidnappers.
Before their lynching, the victims claimed to be hunters from the northern part of the country.
The Nigerian Army has come under scrutiny due to persistent accusations of human rights violations, especially in relation to its response to protests organized by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), often known as the Shiite group.
The group has accused the military of violently suppressing their demonstrations in Abuja and other parts of the country.
