The United States president, Donald Trump has honoured a 13-year-old boy who survived brain cancer named DJ Daniel.
The young boy stole the show during Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday night when the president introduced him to the audience and officially swore him in as a member of the Secret Service.
The White House, in a post shared on its X account on Wednesday, confirmed the swearing-in of the boy as a new secret agent.
"President Trump made his dream come true, swearing him in as a Secret Service agent."
Daniel, who was dressed in a Houston police uniform and sitting with his father in the gallery of the House of Representatives for the speech, received a standing ovation from a majority of the crowd, although some Democrats were seen on camera sitting at various times while Trump was speaking about the 13-year-old.
Trump explained that Daniel and his dad, who was in the crowd and held him up at one point during Trump’s remarks, have been on a "quest" to make his dream of becoming a police officer come true and said that he has been made an honorary member of local police departments.
"In 2018 DJ was diagnosed with brain cancer. The doctors gave him five months at most to live. That was more than six years ago.
"Since then, DJ had been sworn in as an honorary law enforcement officer a number of times.
"Police departments love him. And tonight, DJ, we're going to do you the biggest honor of them all.
"I am asking our new Secret Service director, Sean Curran, to officially make you an agent of the United States Secret Service."
The boy's eyes grew wide with surprise and his father lifted him up. Curran handed him what appeared to be a Secret Service credential, which the boy held up for the crowd to see, and then promptly put his arms around Curran's shoulders in a hug.
