South Korean lawmakers started voting Saturday on a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his short-lived declaration of martial law, even after most ruling party MPs boycotted, a live TV feed showed.
Lawmakers began casting their secret ballots in the chamber, the TV feed showed, but it remained unclear whether enough ruling People Power Party lawmakers who walked out would join the opposition to meet the two-thirds majority needed to pass the measure.
Thewatch Africa africa reported on Wednesday that Lawmakers and South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party members were seen holding placards with the inscription, “Yoon Suk Yeol should resign!” during a rally against President Yoon Suk Yeol at the National Assembly in Seoul.
Yoon’s declaration of South Korea’s first martial law in more than four decades was swiftly overturned by lawmakers in a night of drama, but has plunged the country into political turmoil and alarmed its close allies.
The future of Yoon, a conservative politician and former star public prosecutor who was elected president in 2022, now looks highly uncertain and today will decide if he remains the president of the country or get impeached.p
